sunset low tide at Phi Phi Don Island - Tonsai Bay
If you stay at "Had Yao" you might notice a significant change in sea-level during a day - it can be up to 3 meters. You might have swum in lots of crystal clear water just before noon and plan to go snorkeling late afternoon but after a delicious lunch and a relaxing nap you may find, that most of the water has disappeared in the meantime. On other days you will not notice any obvious change in sea-level. This is not black magic - all these major and minor changes are caused by the tides.

Where has all the water gone ?
low tide at Long Beach befor sunrise
Tides are primarily caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun. In addition to that there are some other minor factors which influence the tides. In general, tidal changes in sea-level are largest on days around full-moon and new-moon with very high tides around noon and midnight and very low tides around sunrise and sunset. On days around half-moon (ascending or descending half-moon) there are only minor or hardly noticeable changes in sea-level.
Take care where you put your belongings on the beach during rising sealevel (i.e. during the time between low tide and high tide) to prevent the Andaman Sea of swallowing it !

As a special service to our guests Phi Phi Hill Resort will provide information on the daily tides. This will help you in planing your time at the sea. Please check the tidetables or ask at the reception.
